    At the Movies: Horton

    First of all, happy belated Easter to everyone. Try as I may I couldn't doodle up something decent to turn into an Easter themed picture on Sunday so bleh... Back to ye old drawing board.

    Saturday I went to the theater, which as of late has been happening of more and more a rarity. While half of me wanted to go see that B.C. movie, the other half just couldn't get over the fact that it was directed by the moron who did Independence Day. So I chicked out and instead took a detour to Horton Hears a Who.

    I must say for a movie based on a children's book I was quite impressed. The animators did a great job at translating Dr. Seuss' artistic style into 3D format, and it made me feel like I was watching a live action play of one of his books. The screenplay was charming as were the character expressions. If I had to pick a favorite character I'd have to go with Horton simply because Jim Carrey makes for one wild and expressive elephant.

    The movie wasn't all good though, it seemed to drag its feet a few times and while I did find Horton's character charming I would have enjoyed getting to know some of the support characters a little better. Still, once again this is a movie based on a little kids book so I'm going to give the director and film makers an "A" for effort on their part.

    Also, what was up with the ending? I'm aware that it's a movie and its fictional but I have to admit even I wasn't prepared for the musical number at the end. Don't get me wrong "Can't Fight This Feeling Anymore" is a great song (I have it on my iPod) but wasn't this a movie intended for kids? I'm not a parent but I'm pretty sure no little kid in the theater was listening to the song and thought "Oh cool mommy, REO Speedwagon!". No more likely the little kids just clapped and said "Hee.. funny elephant!" Don't worry kids, mabey when you get older you'll discover the magic of REO Speedwagon like I did. :)

    Anyways, all in all, Horton was a cute movie. If you're looking to see a CG film with a twist I highly recommend it. And if you grew up with Dr. Seuss like I did... get off your arse!

    Yeah, the REO Speedwagon was definitely a joke for the older crowd (as were many many others.) I absolutely loved it except for a few painfully lame cultural references (Whospace? Really?)
